6/4/2019 0 Comments Final Weeks of FourthWeek of June 3rd-
This week we will be presenting our animal projects to our first, second and third grade SI friends. The students have worked hard on researching an endangered animal and designing a zoo space suitable for this animal based on its needs for survival. Throughout the week we will have these three classes visiting while each group presents their projects with their best Spanish fluency and expression. This week we are also looking forward to Field Day on Wednesday afternoon and a visit from Manuel Collazo (the Education Advisor from the Embassy of Spain's Education Office) to hand out International Spanish Academies diplomas to all fourth grade SI students to celebrate their years of instruction at an ISA school. We will also be piloting the AAPPL Exam on Tuesday and/or Wednesday. This is a computer based assessment to measure the students' proficiency in the Spanish language. If you were able to attend or watch the recording of Amanda Seewald's presentation, she discusses this tool that many programs use as a benchmark for language acquisition. This year we are informally piloting this assessment tool to see if, when and how we might use it in the future. Fourth graders will only be taking a portion of the test as a trial. Read more about the assessment here. Week of June 10th- This last week of school should be a fun one with our parent led science centers on Monday, a water safety program on Tuesday, Send Off Day on Wednesday, Puff Mobile Day on Thursday, and our final half day on Friday to sign shirts and say goodbye. This is such a wonderful class and I will be sad to see them go, but proud as well for all the success they are certain to have in the future.

2/25/2019 0 Comments Fourth GradeThis class is used to hearing it... but they are a one of a kind, truly wonderful group. The year is flying by but if I could I would slow it down to spend more time learning with this enthusiastic group. Here are a few of our classroom highlights and upcoming dates.
Explorers This year in learning about the continent of North America, from the Age of Explorers to the current regions of the continent, students are doing a fabulous job with their Spanish language skills while taking on the role of historical explorers. Nuevos Amigos We continue to speak to our friends in San Sebastián, but we are also preparing introductions for a new contact in Madrid. We are hoping this will be another virtual exchange opportunity for our class and the Spanish Immersion program. Let me know any questions on our video exchanges. Fractions We are currently focusing on equivalent fractions and will be practicing adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing fractions in the coming weeks and finally, comparing fractions and decimals. Check out the below videos in Spanish to reinforce fraction concepts. Khan Academy is also a great resource for math skills with videos both in Spanish and English. Cómo obtener fracciones equivalentes Equivalentes con unidades o conjuntos Khan Academy Visualizing Fractions Daily Five The students are becoming independent learners as they plan their literacy activities for the week each Monday. Their planning schedules are completed at the beginning of the week when we introduce the genre, comprehension and vocabulary strategies for that given week. During our language arts block the students have agency to choose how and when they will complete their practice of these skills. The homework that is sent home each Monday is a reinforcement of these skills. SI students greatly benefit from an at-home English review of the concepts being covered in class in Spanish. Thank you for taking the time to check in with your child on the themes and skills covered in class each week. ASL Days As you have seen in the superintendent's message, we are able to take advantage of Alternative Structured Learning days to complete school work at home during a snow day in order for it to count as a school day. Tomorrow your child will come home with a ASL assignment to keep in their take home binder in case of a snow day that Dr. Maruszczak may call as an ASL day. You can find the classroom assignment here . In the case of an ASL day, your child will also be responsible for completing an assignment for the special they would miss that day. Find our schedule here. Upcoming Important Dates...
4/27/2018 0 Comments End of Year FunWe are excited about some end of the year projects like our Consumer Producer Unit with Mrs. Pilotte's class. So far we have learned what a consumer, producer, good and service are. Now we are trying out these roles! We brainstormed some good product ideas and then evaluated those products based on whether they were feasible to create and if our peers would buy them. Our market research included surveying Memorial School students first through fourth grade. (We are hoping for your help with the some recyclable and common household items. Look for an email from the room moms.)
We have also started prepping for International Night by practicing our dance. We still have some work to do to keep up with Sra. Grau's choreography:) If you would like to contribute by bringing a dish that night sign up here. There will also be a note coming home Monday with more details. Next week we will continue the Consumer/Producer unit using the design process to develop a prototype for the different products the kids have chosen to create. We will keep in mind that mistakes and failures are to be expected. It can take many tries before our great idea becomes reality. We will also begin practicing for our play, Science of Stuff, next week with Mrs. Pilotte's class. Homework will be a biography project that kids will work on at home over the next few weeks and present in class. You can even dress up as the famous person you read about. Check out some important dates below: International Night- May 10th Field Trip to the Ecotarium- May 23rd Biography Presentation- June 1st Science of Stuff Play- June 12th 4/24/2018 0 Comments Proyectos de animalesI was so impressed with the students' animal projects and presentations. They did a fabulous job researching in class, creating visuals at home and presenting to the class. Most impressive was their ability to listen to each other and ask follow up questions during the presentations. Muy bien hecho:) 3/28/2018 0 Comments Lyriko GameWe had an exciting visit from the founders of the app: Lyriko. They spent the whole morning with us and interviewed the students on what they liked about the app and what could be improved. We had a blast meeting the family and showing them our skills on learning Spanish with music.
