We're wrapping up the school year with our unit on plants, estimating multiplication and division, and discussing the themes of relationships in the novel Gracias a Winn Dixie. Below you will find updates on our units and some important info about our end of the year activities. It has been such a pleasure working with your children for the past two years. All of their wonderful qualities; teamwork, honesty, determination... will take them far. I am confident they are ready for the transition to middle school and will be very successful there!
LAS PLANTAS The Wisconsin Fast Growing Brassica plants (can be seen in photos above) have conveniently provided us with the opportunity to experience the complete life cycle of a plant, from seed back to seed. The students contributed to their life cycle by planting the seeds, pruning and transplanting the baby plants and even pollenating the flowers using actual (not live) bees. Our study of plants and animals this year was also enhanced by our visit to the Roger Williams Zoo. The kids had a blast (despite the rain) seeing the animals and learning about local food chains in the 'Diversity of Life' program. GRACIAS A WINN DIXIE This novel has provided us with rich material about friendships, family and confronting one's mistakes. The class has had many great discussions based on these themes. The book has also given us opportunities to discuss and compare Spanish grammar, vocabulary and structures with those in English. MATH FACTS This Friday we will be celebrating the accomplishment of everyone in the class passing their timed math fact quizzes. The most impressive part of seeing the whole class pass was watching them support each other to achieve this. They worked together in study groups and timed each other on practice quizzes. As much as each individual worked hard, they were able to see that working together can be more fun and produce greater results! Our celebration will be a pizza picnic during Friday's lunch time. I will be providing the Papa Gino's pizza from the cafeteria, but if your child would like something else or something in addition (drink, fruit, vegetable), please send from home as usual. END OF YEAR ACTIVITIES Friday June 13th: Pizza Picnic Tuesday June 17th: Solar Panel Challenge: Mr. Lavigne has generously offered to provide the students with a STEM challenge on putting together solar panels and showing the students who this alternative energy source work by heating water. The students have been introduced to STEM by Nipmuc high school students who came in last month. They presented a great explanation of STEM and their future careers in the field. They also gave the class a challenge to build the tallest structure that would support the weight of a marshmellow using only toothpicks, string, tape, and rubber bands. Not only did the kids love it, but they were very successful. We are looking forward to Mr. Lavigne's project! Thursday June 19th: Fourth Grade Send off Day: Permission slips will be coming soon to allow your child to travel by bus to Kiwanis Beach for the day. Our class color is purple so make sure to wear a purple shirt on this day. Monday June 23rd: Last Day of School: We will be watching the Third Grade Talent Show on this day. SUMMER TIME! Please see the above flier if you are interested in having a high school student tutor your child this summer. Julia and her sister have gone through the Spanish Immersion program and are great role models for your child to work with to keep up his/her Spanish over the summer. Thanks to Julie DeZutter for finding an online version of the summer Spanish reading. Thank you as well to Dorothy Scally for ordering the book to have at the Upton Library. Enjoy a fun, relaxing and safe summer!
