1/7/2014 0 Comments Happy New YearFeliz ano nuevo The new year is a clean slate to begin fresh, set new goals and up our efforts in all we want to achieve. To be critical readers, inquisitive scientists, effective writers and confident problem solvers are a few goals for 2014. I'm looking forward to striving for these higher levels of academic independence with your child. A lot of things are on our plates for 2014, one of them being the English Language Arts MCAS coming up in March. Having taken these tests in third grade the students will have some familiarity with the format, but they will also find additional tasks and higher expectations on this year's MCAS. I encourage the students to feel confident about the test and remind them that this is just a snapshot of their capabilities and not the only thing they are or should be judged on. Putting forth their best effort and taking their time are the strategies I emphasize to students; not only on tests but in all tasks. In preparing for their success on the tests, which is in the bigger picture is preparing for their success as critical thinkers and problem solvers, we will increase our practice during class and homework on ELA skills. On a lighter note, the students have begun the exciting task of writing a Mystery play with author, Steve Krasner. Steve is working with each fourth grade class to craft all the essential elements of a good mystery script. The setting, characters and character traits are already established and today the class helped to write the first act. You'll see the product of Steve's and the students hard work at the student performance coming soon. The valuable experience is thanks to a grant written by Julie DeZutter. Thank you!
Equally exciting will be the arrival of our frogs and fiddler crabs expected in the next week. The kids are thrilled to have animals in the classroom and will be sure to learn much about animal traits and adaptations through their observations and care of the animals. Although we have been practicing division since the start of the school year and have experimented with different strategies to solve problems with multi digit dividends, our current math unit focuses on division concepts and the relationship between division and multiplication. Students can practice these skills at home through IXL or by sharing with you the different division strategies that we have practiced. !Prospero ano a todos!
