2/24/2014 0 Comments Valentine WishesThank you families for your contributions to our Valentine's celebration. The snow has made for some short weeks, but luckily the students have been working hard in the time we have had. An enjoyable, albeit abbreviated, celebration was well deserved.
In continuing to build our English language skills, the students are studying Latin, Greek and Old English roots, suffixes and prefixes that commonly appear in English words. We are also able to make connections between English and Spanish by seeing that the Latin and Greek prefixes and suffixes are also found in Spanish words! Not only are the kids becoming experts on word structure, but also text structure. We've looked a lot at informational text and have seen that authors will organize the information in different ways: such as cause and effect, problem/solution, questions/answer, description or chronological order. We've also been reading literature closely through our study of the book, Charlotte's Web. The students are exploring how authors build in themes and central messages in their writing. Our current math unit is Size, Shapes and Symmetry. In this hands on unit we are reviewing the attributes of shapes and measurement skills to accurately measure area, perimeter and volume. Mrs. DeZutter was kind enough to come in to enhance our animal unit of study by reviewing the adaptations of the African Dwarf Frog. We looked closely at the tiny parts of the frog, inside and out. We continue to observe our live fiddler craps and compare and contrast their structures to that of the frogs. Mrs. DeZutter asked some great questions that got us thinking about the structure/function relationships and how they help the animals survive in their environments. The students have been preparing with Mr. MacFadden for our exciting and sophisticated field trip to the Boston Symphony Orchestra this Friday. Have your child wear his/her best (but also comfortable) and bring a disposable lunch on this day. Other important dates are... * Read Across America Day (wear crazy hats) Thursday Feb 27th * Boston Symphony Orchestra, Friday Feb 28th * No School (teacher conferences), March 14th * Long Composition MCAS, March 18th * Report Cards go home, March 20th * ELA MCAS, March 25th, 26th
