Students have been scientists this year as they construct terrariums and observe baby spider plants growing roots. We are exploring the interdependent relationships of ecosystems and discovering what plants need to survive. We have learned the plant parts and each of their functions. Students will also begin exploring science concepts with Mrs. Pilotte this week. The second grade teachers have been working together to update our science and social studies units. Mrs. Coutre and I will be teaching weekly lessons on social studies and Mrs. Perry and Mrs. Pilotte will be teaching the science lessons. While your child will have some lessons with Mrs. Pilotte in English, he/she will continue to review science vocabulary and concepts with me in Spanish.
We are jumping into social studies by exploring the culture and geography of a small city in Spain called San Sebastian. Hopefully your child has told you of our weekly Skype calls to Oskar's fourth grade classroom. Amaia, our Spanish Language Assistant, has put us in touch with the pre-k through 12th grade school she attended and it has been a great experience. We speak with an English class and help them practice their English and then they help us practice castellano (which is what they call Spanish). We've learned there are many languages in Spain besides 'Spanish'. Our objectives with this Skype relationship are to have an authentic opportunity to use the Spanish language with native speaking peers, help teach them English, hone our communication skills in both languages, compare and contrast another culture with our own, and of course make new friends!

We have dived right into the new math program, Go Math. The students have been able to practice the math skills of Chapter 1 online, through games, and with practice pages in their workbooks. As we complete pages in the workbook they will come home in your child's take home folder. When reviewing your child's work with him/her, note some of the vocabulary you may see in the list below. You will also see a QR code on some of the problems. Scan the code to watch a video that shows how to solve the problem! Vocabulary from Chapter 1: valor posicional- place value unidades- ones decenas- tens dígitos- digits grupos- groups bolsas de diez- bags of 10 sueltos- singles forma desarrollada- expanded form We are very fortunate to have help this year from Nipmuc Spanish Immersion students. Colleen Lavoie, who is a senior at Nipmuc and an alum of the Memorial SI program, is volunteering in our classroom on Wednesday afternoons. She will be working with us on math centers during this time. Dallas O'Hagan and Taylor Moore are the first participants in the SI teacher assistant course that I am working on with Sra. Moloney. So far these students have done an excellent job preparing and delivering lessons to our class as well as to the other SI classes. We look forward to their next lesson on Hispanic Heritage Month. Lastly we welcome Amaia Soroa as our Spanish Language and Culture Assistant for this school year. She will be working in most of the Spanish Immersion classrooms here and at Clough. We look forward to our time with her. She has already proven a lovely and knowledgeable assistant.
Stay tuned for the the next Blog on our science projects and reading units. Gracias! |
